Baroka into the Top 8 after win away to Chippa

21 Apr 2021, 04:14 GMT+10

Baroka FC moved into the top eight with a 1-0 win over Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday.

Denwin Farmer and Thamsanqa Masiya came into the Baroka starting lineup, while Gregory Damons, Maloisane Mokhele and Bienvenu Eva Nga were brought into the Chippa side.

Both teams were very cautious in the early stages and trying to build up from the back. In the 10th minute, Augustine Kwem held up the ball well and offloaded to Damons, whose good-looking left-foot drive was blocked by Farmer.

Five minutes later, Chippa defender Sandile Mthethwa conceded a corner and Evidence Makgopa headed narrowly wide from Gerald Phiri's resulting set-piece.

With 20 minutes gone Bakgaga striker Richard Mbulu tried the spectacular with an acrobatic overhead kick but it missed to the right of Ugandan shot-stopper Ismail Watenga's goal.

Eva Nga then let fly with a fizzing long-range drive that skimmed off the turf and forced Oscarine Masuluke into making the save sharply down to his left.

A costly error from Chippa at the back allowed Goodman Mosele to race through on goal and power the ball past Watenga.

Chances were few and far between in the second half in comparison to the first. Chilli Boys frontman Kwem, however, was looking a threat and on the hour mark he was fed in by Luvuyo Phewa but his effort went over the bar.

Baroka defender Nhlanhla Mgaga then gave away a corner in the 73rd minute and Damons' shot went inches wide from the delivery.

Damons had a number of half-chances in the match and his final effort in the 87th minute once again failed to find the target as the Chilli Boys find themselves sitting precariously in the relegation playoff spot.
